workforce to tend to caregiving responsibilities  .
Caregiving families spend 2.5 times more on out-of-pocket medical expenses than families
in which no one is disabled.     
Despite all that family caregivers do for America,        

America does very little to                 
support family caregivers.

Aging Statistics
The older population--persons 65 years or older--numbered 37.3 million in 2006 (the latest year
for which data is available). They represented 12.4% of the U.S. population, about one in every
eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 71.5 million older persons, more than twice their
number in 2000. People 65+ represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are
expected to grow to be 20% of the population by 2030. The information in this section of the AoA

Statistics for National Mobility Awareness Month
United States and Canada

Over 18 million people in the United States and Canada have mobility issues.

6 Million of those with mobility issues in the U.S. and Canada are veterans.

People with disabilities constitute the largest minority group in the United States.

The number of veterans with disabilities has jumped by 25% since 2001.

One in five elderly people have mobility issues.

Caregivers spend an average of 20 hours per week providing assistance.

The value of the services family caregivers provide for “free” is estimated to be $375 billion a year.

According to the Harris Poll, sponsored by the National Organization on Disabilities (NOD), just under
a third of people with disabilities reported that inadequate transportation was a problem; of those
individuals, over half said it was a major problem.

Workers with disabilities are consistently rated as above average in performance,
quality and attendance.

United States
56.7 million people in the U.S. have disabilities.
8.4 percent of children under 15 had some kind of disability
10 percent of people 18-64 have disabilities.
38 percent of adults 65 and older have disabilities.
