Family caregivers are your neighbors, business associates, employees, and friends . They can be found in every community , at every income level, and among all races and creeds. The market value of family caregivers' services has been conservatively estimated at more than $300 billion annually, more than twice what is spent on nursing homes and home care combined. Family Caregivers are the essential building block of America's long-term care system , providing more than 80% of all services. . Ten percent of family caregivers have had to leave the workforce to tend to caregiving responsibilities . Caregiving families spend 2.5 times more on out-of-pocket medical expenses than families in which no one is disabled. Despite all that family caregivers do for America, America does very little to support family caregivers. |

| Aging Statistics The older population--persons 65 years or older--numbered 37.3 million in 2006 (the latest year for which data is available). They represented 12.4% of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 71.5 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. People 65+ represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to grow to be 20% of the population by 2030.
