When taking prescribed medications, or helping someone who takes
prescribed medication, the first and most important thing to do is
read the directions.
Some medications require an empty stomach. Some medications need
to be taken with food or milk. Some cannot be crushed.
For some medications to be effective, one most monitor the amount of
time that passes from swallowing the pill, to swallowing substances
containing vitamins, fiber or calcium.
If you do not follow the directions, rashes, sweating, vomiting, diarrhea,
severe reactions or other unpleasantness may result.
When beginning a new medication, write down the time and circumstances
when it is taken, and any reactions.
When caregiving, coordinating medications is very much like leading a
choir or orchestra.
Directing WHAT
should be taken WHEN
can make all the difference in the successful performance
the medication has on the body.
Refer to the
Medication Checklist
to review questions and learn the answers.
Look at the new medicine  before you swallow. Make sure the correct
medicine in the bottle when you get it from the pharmacy.
The link below offers images of pills you can look up and print out.
Use a timer if you need to wait an hour to eat, or 4 hours before you
can take your vitamins. You can use a cell phone to set reminder alarms,
or use a kitchen timer. Some iPhone application links are provided below.
Timers are available on our
TIC TOC PAGE.
