| Good Neighbor Referral Service through Lutheran Senior Services Good Neighbor caregivers are paid an hourly rate ranging from $9 to $11.50 per hour. Each independent caregiver undergoes a police background check, is screened through the Family Care Safety Registry, and is bonded when they begin their association with LSS. Clients are responsible for determining the suitability, training, or experience of any individual hired. Since Good Neighbor Program caregivers are self-employed, the client pays the worker directly for care or services. Cash or personal checks are accepted. The client assumes all responsibilities for paying the required taxes. For information on paying Social Security taxes, call the Social Security Administration at 1.800.772.1213. For information about paying federal taxes, call the Internal Revenue Service at 1.800.829.1040. A personal tax consultant should also be contacted. Handymen either charge hourly or flat rates. The client bears the responsibility for negotiating the total cost of the job prior to start of service.
